Rabbits have a highly specialised digestive system designed to process fibre almost constantly. Understanding the basics helps explain why treat choice matters.
🌿 A Simple Overview of Rabbit Digestion:
- Food enters the stomach
- Fibre moves through the intestines
- The caecum (a large fermentation chamber) breaks down fibre using beneficial bacteria
- This produces caecotrophs — nutrient-rich droppings that rabbits re-eat to absorb essential nutrients
This system depends on a delicate balance of fibre and healthy gut bacteria.
When that balance is disrupted, problems can follow.
🌾 What Happens When Treats Are Too Starchy or Sugary? Treats that are low in fibre and high in starch or sugar can: Disrupt the balance of bacteria in the caecum, Slow gut movement, Increase gas production, Reduce appetite.
You might notice: Smaller droppings, Uneaten caecotrophs, Signs of bloating, Lethargy
Sometimes these changes are subtle at first. Other times they can escalate quickly. Because rabbits’ digestion is built around fibre, even occasional unsuitable treats can disturb that balance.
