Toltrazuril Dosage Calculator for Leverets [Updated on: 08/31/24 07:14]

Toltrazuril is a broad-spectrum anticoccidial drug that is effective against both gamont & schizont stages of Eimeria spp. It's used to treat coccidia in Leverets (Hares) & Rabbits and is sold as Baycox in most parts of the world. Unfortunately toltrazuril is not readily available in the US. There are a number of concentrations of Baycox (toltrazuril) available: 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. 5% is most commonly used with Hares & Rabbits.

Per the facebook Hare Rescue group the prophylaxis Leveret protocol is 10 mg/kg. They recommend a 9 day dosing protocol (2 days on, 5 days off, 2 days on) dosing at the 10 mg/kg with toltrazuril 5% (50 mg/mL). The calculator will only show the dosing based on the data inputted.

Dosage in "U-40 Units": ≈ 0 units
Based on the numbers entered, your leveret of 1 g [0.001 kg] or 0.035 oz [0 lb 0.035 oz] or 0.002 lbs would use a dose of 0 mL [mls] (0 cc), of toltrazuril 5% suspension.

Math for a 1 g or 0.035 oz leveret: 10 mg/kg × 1 g ÷ 50 mg/mL ≈ 0 mL

About U-100 Insulin Syringes
  - If you are going to use a U-100 insulin syringe then you MUST remove the needle!!

Dosing a 100 gram leveret with a normal 1 mL syringe can be extreamly challenging! They will need a dose of 0.02 mL of toltrazuril and using a standard 1 mL syringe is near impossible. You can make this task much easier by using a 0.3 cc (0.3 mL) U-100 insulin syringe (with needle removed). These are many times sold as "3/10cc U-100 insulin syringes." This syringe has a barrel size 1/3 the size of a 1 mL barrel.

Smaller animals and pets (if they need to be given insulin) will use a U-100 or U-40 syringe. Using U-100 syringe makes the conversion of mL of toltrazuril to 'units' much easier! One unit of U-100 (insulin) is 0.01 mL.

This is a 1cc (1 mL) U-100 insulin syringe with markings every TWO UNITS.

This is a 1/2cc (0.5 mL) U-100 insulin syringe with markings every ONE UNIT.

These are 3/10cc (0.3 mL) U-100 insulin syringes. Left is half-scale (half-unit markings). Right is whole units with ONE mark for each UNIT.
