You're Nobody 'til Some Bunny Loves You!

Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month was created in 2002 by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Petfinder.com joined forces with them that year to celebrate the first annual Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit month. It seems like it is only celebrated in the USA and some rescues in Canada.

The major promoters of the event-month were/are: PetFinder.com, House Rabbit Society (HRS), The House Rabbit Network, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and Many, many rabbit rescues and shelters!

  • From 2002 thru 2003 the month it was celebrated in July.
  • From 2004 thru today it is celebrated in February.

Over the last few months I have emailed the ASPCA a number of times asking for information and why they do not "celebrate" the month anymore. They never respond back. I guess they are busy.....

History: On May 27th, 2002 "Ronie" posted, to Usenet in the group alt.pets.rabbits, a sample press release dated May 5th, 2002, from Jacque Schultz, from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to announce the first ever annual ADOPT-A-RESCUED-RABBIT MONTH.

"(YOUR SHELTER) CELEBRATES THIS JULY AS THE FIRST ANNUAL ADOPT-A-RESCUED-RABBIT MONTH You're Nobody 'til Some Bunny Loves You!

"(CITY, DATE) - This July (YOUR SHELTER), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and Petfinder.com have joined forces to celebrate the first annual Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit month. Rabbits are the most popular small mammal in American households. Unfortunately, these quiet, affectionate creatures are the third mostly likely animal to be dropped off at the nation's shelters. Tiny bunnies bought as Easter presents or springtime birthday gifts grow up and get cast aside when their novelty wears off. Those who surrender or abandon their rabbits will miss out on 8 - 10 years of bunny hijinks."

Sometimes a rescue or shelter will hold a special month to try to adopt out more rabbits. A good example of this was at the Alameda shelter (in California). Ms. Mim Carlson (executive director of Friends of Alameda Animal Shelter) posted an article for the Mercury News newspaper [online] where she wrote: "July is "Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month." Rabbits can make wonderful companions. They can live from seven to 10 years and with careful introduction and supervision can get along with many other companion animals."

I emailed Ms. Mim Carlson and she kindly responded back: "We were having our own special "Adopt A Rabbit Month" for the shelter because we had so many bunnies here. This is not to be confused with the National "Adopt A Rescued Rabbit Month" which is, as you said, in February."
